If you are six weeks from the NCLEX and the exam is the only thing that matters, the question bank is the purchase, not the flashcard app. Archer Review is $109.99 for three months and UWorld is $229.99 for thirty days (both checked 2026-09-25).

Why we wrote this one
Four articles hold page one for this search. Between them they publish 958, 861, 1,370 and 1,845 words, and they publish zero dated prices. Not one dollar figure with a date attached, for an audience whose entire question is what they can afford on a student loan.
They also have a habit. One is a nursing school's blog that ends by inviting you to enrol. One is a test-prep company whose fourth pick is its own app. One is a subscription vendor whose first heading is "The All-in-One Winner" followed by its own name, with the real competitors demoted to a section called "complement your studies". One is an affiliate site that closes with a verdict for a single paid product.
So this list does three things none of them do. Every price carries the date it was checked. Every app carries one honest limitation, including ours. And the list runs to 34 apps rather than seven, because the useful ones are usually the ones nobody has told you about.
What a year actually costs

The spread is the point. Two students can sit the same NCLEX, one having spent nothing and the other having spent $599.99 (all prices checked 2026-09-25), and the difference in what they spent is much larger than the difference in what the tools do.
1. Anki, AnkiDroid and AnkiMobile
Free on desktop and Android. $24.99 one-off on iPhone (checked 2026-09-25).
Anki is missing from all four page-one articles, which is strange, because the NCLEX is exactly the exam it was built for. You learn a drug class in September and you are asked about it in June. That gap is the problem spaced repetition solves, and Anki solves it better than anything on this page.
AnkiDroid on Android is free, has no ads and no in-app purchases. AnkiMobile on iPhone is $24.99 once, forever (checked 2026-09-25), which is less than two months of most apps here and is the entire reason to own an iPhone instead of borrowing a laptop. Syncing through AnkiWeb is free on every platform.
Limitation: the interface is genuinely unfriendly and the first evening is unpleasant. AnkiMobile also sits at 4.0 from 2,341 reviews, the lowest rating of any flashcard app in this list, and most of those reviews are about the price rather than the app. If you want something that works in ten minutes, this is not it. 2. Picmonic
Free tier. $14.99/month or $79.99/year (checked 2026-09-25). 4.9 from 21,191 reviews.
The nursing-specific app that has earned its reputation. Picmonic turns each concept into an absurd illustrated scene, and the absurdity is the mechanism: a picture of a cartoon character doing something ridiculous is easier to retrieve under exam pressure than a line of text you read four times.
Limitation: the mnemonics are unforgettable and they occasionally get between you and the concept. Students who learn the picture perfectly sometimes find they cannot say what the underlying pathophysiology is, which the NCLEX will notice.
3. Mindomax
Free forever. Premium is $0, free until 2028 (checked 2026-09-25 at mindomax.com/price).
We make this one, so read the next paragraph with that in mind. Mindomax is a spaced-repetition flashcard app with a Leitner-box structure and AI card generation from your own notes, which is the part that matters for nursing, where the material you need is in your lecture slides rather than in anyone's prewritten deck. The free tier gives you one box with unlimited cards and the review scheduling, and premium is currently free.
Limitation: it is new and it is small. There are no ratings on the App Store listing yet, there are no ready-made NCLEX decks, and you build your own cards or import them. If you want to download a finished pharmacology deck tonight, use Brainscape or Quizlet instead. If you want your own notes turned into cards, that is the case for this one.
4. Quizlet
Free tier. Quizlet Plus $9.99/month or $44.99/year (checked 2026-09-25). 4.8 from 1,121,146 reviews.
The default, and the reason it is the default is the shared decks. Search "pharmacology nursing" and you will find hundreds of sets somebody else already typed out.
Limitation: offline study and several of the better study modes sit behind Plus, and the quality of a shared deck is the quality of the student who made it. We compared the two most common choices in Quizlet vs Anki.
5. Brainscape
Free tier. Pro $19.99/month, $59.99/year, or $199.99 lifetime (checked 2026-09-25). 4.8 from 21,402 reviews.
Confidence-based repetition: you rate how well you knew each card from one to five and the algorithm schedules on that. It has a large certified nursing collection.
Limitation: most nursing decks are user-made and vary. The lifetime tier at $199.99 (checked 2026-09-25) is good value if you will still be studying in three years and a poor purchase if you qualify next spring.
6. Knowt
Free tier. Student Ultra $14.99 to $24.99/month, $59.99 to $149.99/year depending on the offer running (checked 2026-09-25). 4.7 from 10,770 reviews.
Imports a Quizlet set, turns a PDF or a lecture recording into cards, and does it quickly. For a nursing student with forty slides on acid-base balance, that is the whole pitch.
Limitation: AI-generated cards still need checking against the book, and on nursing content the cost of an unchecked wrong card is higher than on most subjects.
7. RemNote
Free tier. On iOS $14.99/month or $149.99/year; on the web $8/month billed yearly at $96 (both checked 2026-09-25). 4.8 from 1,597 reviews.
Notes and flashcards in one document, so you write your lecture notes and the cards fall out of them. Buy it on the web rather than through the App Store and you pay roughly a third less for the same thing.
Limitation: it is a lot of app to learn in the middle of a semester.

The ones worth knowing about
Most lists stop at seven apps, which means they stop before the interesting part. A few from the table deserve a sentence of their own.
There are two Davis's Drug Guides. The same book is published as an app by Unbound Medicine at $39.99/year and by Atmosphere Apps at $38.99/year (both checked 2026-09-25). No article on this subject mentions that you can buy the cheaper one.
PharmaLingo does one thing, the top 300 drugs, for $79.99/year (checked 2026-09-25). It has 76 reviews. It is the kind of app that never appears in a list because nobody has heard of it, and it is the kind that a pharmacology student would have liked to hear about in September.
Prognosis and Medscape are both free with no in-app purchases at all (checked 2026-09-25). Medscape is free because it is ad-supported, and its 3.6 rating from 1,403 reviews is what users make of that trade.
NurseGrid has 150,748 reviews, the highest count of any nursing-specific app in this list, and it is not a study app. It manages your shifts. It is here because it is the app nursing students actually keep, which is worth knowing when you are deciding what to put on a phone.
Med-Surg Nursing Clinical Companion is free with no paid tier at all, and it was last updated on 2026-01-12. That is eight months, which is inside our one-year cutoff but not by a lot.
Two apps we removed
CNA Mastery was last updated on 2023-02-09 and Straight Nursing on 2024-05-14. Both are still on the store, both still have ratings, and both fail the only test that matters for a list like this: somebody has to still be maintaining them. They are named here rather than quietly dropped, because a list you cannot audit is a list you should not trust.
How to actually choose
Work out which of three situations you are in.
You are in the first two years and drowning in content. The purchase is a spaced-repetition habit, not a subscription. Anki or Mindomax, free, plus Picmonic at $79.99/year (checked 2026-09-25) if the visual approach suits you. Do not buy a question bank yet, because you will burn the questions before you need them.
You are approaching the NCLEX with eight to twelve weeks left. The purchase is a question bank. Archer Review at $109.99 for three months or UWorld at $229.99 for thirty days (both checked 2026-09-25). Keep whatever flashcard app you already use rather than starting a new one six weeks out.
You are on clinicals and need answers in the moment. The purchase is a reference. Davis's Drug Guide at $38.99/year from Atmosphere (checked 2026-09-25), or Medscape for nothing if you can tolerate the ads.
The mistake that costs the most is buying all three in September. A question bank bought a year early expires unused, and $599.99 of UWorld (checked 2026-09-25) is a great deal of money to spend on something you looked at twice.
